There are some 4,000 miles (6,000 km) of Public Rights of Way in Wiltshire that anyone can use. They fall into three categories: –
- Rights of Way paths: we have a right of way to use them by foot.
- Permissive paths: the landowner grants permission but can withdraw it
- Bridleways: cycles (and horses) as well people and dogs on foot.
Access to Public Rights of Way is hampered when they become overgrown or obstructed:
- Where a Public Right of Way crosses privately owned land, it’s the responsibility of the landowner to maintain.
- Where landownership is unclear, identifying those responsible for cutting back encroaching vegetation can be more complex. As a community initiative, Downton Parish Council has historically coordinated volunteer working parties to assist in maintaining accessibility along these route. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to coordinate volunteer working parties to a fixed timetable. Volunteer availability can vary from year to year, and periods of rapid growth following warm, wet weather can result in vegetation becoming overgrown within a relatively short period. We’d love to hear from anyone interested in joining a footpath maintenance working party. Please contact the Council’s Administrative Officer: admin@downtonparishcouncil.gov.uk
